Clear Aligner Treatment
12.02.2026

In orthodontic cases such as crowded teeth, spacing issues, or jaw expansion, we can now move beyond the traditional method of braces and benefit from clear aligner treatment.

Clear aligner treatment, also known as Invisalign or wire-free orthodontics, uses custom-made aligners created with advanced 3D software technology. Unlike conventional braces, this method does not create intense pressure on the teeth, which means it does not cause significant pain or discomfort.

If this has sparked your interest and you would like to learn more, let’s take a closer look at the details of clear aligner treatment.

Reasons to Choose Clear Aligner Treatment

The best way to explain clear aligner treatment is by comparing it to traditional braces.

  • Instead of the visible metal wire appearance, clear aligners provide a more aesthetic and discreet look. This helps you feel more confident in social, professional, or school environments, especially when speaking in public.
  • Since clear aligners are removable, they are more hygienic and practical. Users can remove them before eating and put them back on afterward. They do not interfere with meals, although it is recommended to remove them while consuming hot foods such as soup.
  • Irritation and sores on the inner lips and cheeks caused by friction from metal brackets and wires are not an issue with clear aligner treatment.
  • You will not experience problems such as broken brackets or loose wires, which are common with traditional braces.
  • Based on experience, it is considered a faster and more comfortable treatment method.
  • Unlike braces, where food can easily get stuck between brackets, clear aligners do not cause such problems.
  • Short-term removal of the aligners does not negatively affect the treatment process.
  • Dental check-ups are scheduled at longer intervals compared to braces treatment (approximately every 3 months).

Clear aligner treatment can also provide effective results for certain gum-related issues.

Treatment Process

In the clear aligner treatment process, the patient’s measurements are first taken using a 3D scanner and transferred to a digital environment. The desired final position of the teeth is then designed digitally. After planning is completed, the aligners are produced within approximately 5–6 weeks and prepared for patient use. Small, fixed, transparent attachments placed on certain areas of the teeth help the aligners fit properly.

The total number of aligners to be produced is calculated based on each 0.05 mm of planned tooth movement, with one aligner created for each incremental change. Therefore, the measurements and 3D scans taken during the initial examination are extremely important. The precision required during the preparation stage may extend the production time.

The duration of aligner use varies depending on the complexity of the case. Generally speaking, treatment lasts between 1 and 1.5 years. During the initial phase, wearing the aligners continuously for 18–20 hours per day is recommended. When used as instructed, the aligner adapts to the shape of the teeth within approximately two weeks, indicating that the correction process has begun.

Retention Treatment, Clear Aligner Treatment, and Braces Treatment

After completing the clear aligner treatment process, many patients will encounter the term “retention treatment.” As explained earlier, clear aligner treatment straightens the teeth, but afterward, your dentist may recommend a retainer to prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original positions. Retainers are typically made of a thicker and more durable material and are used during the retention phase.

Braces treatment, on the other hand, is the traditional orthodontic method in which wires are applied to the teeth and jaw to gradually move them into position. In some cases where braces treatment does not achieve the desired outcome, clear aligner treatment may be recommended as an additional solution.

Main Points to Consider

For clear aligner treatment, there is no strict upper age limit. However, for younger patients, permanent molars and incisors must have erupted before starting treatment. As with most orthodontic procedures, sufficient bone support and healthy surrounding tissues are necessary for successful results.

Unlike braces treatment, which involves certain dietary restrictions, there are no specific food restrictions with clear aligners. You can remove the aligners while eating and therefore do not face limitations on certain foods. However, maintaining proper hygiene is essential. The removable nature of the aligners makes cleaning easier and supports a higher level of oral hygiene.

For cleaning, the aligners can be washed with a toothbrush and soapy water after removal. Although simple, this step is very important. Neglecting cleaning can significantly affect the treatment process. Experts also warn that toothpaste or harsh cleaning products may damage the aligners. Inadequate cleaning may lead to unpleasant odors and plaque buildup.
