In this article, where we provide recommendations for denture wearers, you can learn what to pay attention to while using dentures.

All dental prostheses have certain limitations, and no matter how perfectly they are designed, it is difficult for them to fully replace natural teeth. Therefore, individuals who use dentures should be aware of important considerations and act accordingly.

Recommendations for Denture Wearers

Dental prostheses are commonly referred to as dentures. Dentures are used when teeth are lost due to various reasons. In addition to eliminating aesthetic concerns, they also enable essential functions such as chewing and biting to be performed properly. However, denture users should pay attention to certain important points. Protecting against oral diseases and ensuring the longevity of dentures depends on proper care and cleaning. Now, let’s take a closer look at what denture wearers should consider.

Individuals using fixed prostheses should brush their teeth regularly at least twice a day. In addition, the use of dental floss and interdental brushes provides effective prosthesis care. If proper maintenance of fixed prostheses is not carried out regularly, unwanted conditions such as gum problems and bad breath may occur.

  • Removable dentures should be taken out after every meal and thoroughly rinsed with plenty of water to keep them clean. Making this cleaning routine a habit after every meal is important.
  • Dentures should also be removed daily and brushed separately to eliminate food residues and plaque buildup.
  • Specially designed denture brushes should be used for cleaning. Brushes with soft bristles are recommended.
  • Care should be taken not to use substances that may damage or scratch the surface polish of the dentures. Using soapy water or specially produced denture cleaning products is beneficial. Avoid using detergents, bleach, or similar harsh chemicals.
  • It is also recommended to soak dentures in denture cleaning tablets at least twice a week overnight. This provides chemical cleaning in addition to mechanical cleaning.
  • When dentures are not in the mouth, they should be kept in water.
  • To prevent dentures from falling and breaking during brushing, it is advisable to brush them over a soft towel.
  • Even if there are no complaints, denture wearers should visit their dentist for regular check-ups approximately every six months.

How Should Dentures Be Stored?

Storing dentures is just as important as cleaning them. The first thing to consider when storing dentures is keeping them moist. Maintaining moisture is essential to prevent them from losing their shape. For this reason, dentures can be stored every night in a denture container filled with a suitable soaking solution.

In addition, dentures should be removed during sleep. Wearing them overnight may cause unwanted irritation in the mouth. Therefore, it is beneficial to remove them before going to bed. Dentures should always be kept in their designated storage container to maintain hygiene. This also helps prevent infection-related problems.
