How are Braces Fitted?
12.02.2026

Orthodontic treatment, also known as braces treatment, is applied to patients who have problems such as crowding, spacing, overlapping teeth, or jaw irregularities. The stages of braces treatment consist of the initial examination, diagnosis, planning and preparation, bracket and wire selection, application, and the retention phase.

Before moving on to the stages of orthodontic treatment, the patient should find a trusted and experienced orthodontic specialist. Schedule an appointment with an orthodontist and attend your initial consultation. During this examination, you can learn the answers to questions such as how braces treatment is performed and what the stages of braces treatment involve from your specialist. Let’s take a closer look together at how orthodontic treatment is performed and what the stages of braces treatment are…

Braces Treatment Stages: Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

After scheduling the first appointment with a specialist orthodontist, the braces treatment process moves to the diagnosis stage. During the examination, the patient undergoes various tests. Following a detailed oral examination, cephalometric and panoramic radiographs are taken, along with facial and dental photographs, to establish a diagnosis. After the diagnosis is made, the next stage of orthodontic treatment is preparing the treatment plan.

The treatment plan, which provides answers to the question of how orthodontic treatment will be performed, is decided jointly by the dentist and the patient. Once the treatment plan is finalized, the next steps in the braces treatment process include procedures such as fillings, tooth extractions, implant treatment, or professional dental cleaning if needed. After all these stages are completed, the braces are applied to the patient’s teeth.

Application and Retention in Braces Treatment

As the stages of orthodontic treatment progress, the application procedure can be performed in two ways: the traditional method or a chemical/light-cured bonding method. In the traditional method, brackets are attached to the teeth using special adhesives. After all brackets are bonded to the teeth, the archwire is threaded through them. In the bonding method, an impression is taken according to the patient’s mouth structure, and the brackets are placed on this model. The brackets are then transferred from the model to the patient’s mouth, and the wire is inserted through the brackets.

After completing the active stages of braces treatment, the retention phase is extremely important. Not neglecting retention appliances ensures more successful results and prevents the teeth from shifting back to their previous positions. Following the completion of braces treatment, retention appliances such as the Hawley retainer (a removable appliance worn on the upper jaw), the Essix retainer (a nearly invisible removable appliance), and fixed retainers (usually bonded behind the lower front teeth) help you maintain your newly aligned smile.
