Types of Dental Veneers
10.02.2026

Dental crown types are generally named after the materials used in their structure. The number of teeth to be crowned varies from person to person. If the number of teeth to be crowned is more than two, the restoration must be more durable. For patients who will have more than two crowns, dentists usually prefer zirconium-based or metal-supported dental crowns. Dental crown types include:

1- Metal-Supported Porcelain Dental Crown

After taking measurements of the tooth structure, a suitable metal substructure is created according to these measurements. The tooth shape is formed by dental technicians using special brushes, and the metal substructure applied in the patient’s mouth must be compatible. After the crowns are checked, they are polished and made ready for use.

2- Full Ceramic Empress Dental Crown

This method is applied by those who want to have a single tooth crowned. It is a technique applied to a single front tooth and differs from metal-supported crowns. Compared to other crowns, this technique is less durable. There is a high risk of fracture in case of hard impacts.

3- Zirconium-Supported Porcelain Dental Crown

This is a dental crown technique that is commonly used to provide an aesthetic appearance and offers many advantages. It is known as the dental crown closest to the natural tooth in appearance.

4- Porcelain Laminate Veneer Dental Crown

Unlike other dental crown methods, this technique is applied only to the front surface of the tooth. It is an application that has been frequently preferred in recent years. It is also known as one of the most favored dental crown options among patients. It ensures a flawless appearance of the tooth.

5- Composite Laminate Veneer Dental Crown

This method is performed by bonding materials onto the tooth and is not exactly a full dental crown type. The dentist reshapes the tooth from scratch by making additions to it; this procedure is called a composite laminate veneer dental crown. It is mostly applied in the repair of cracked teeth or filling the gaps between spaced teeth.

What Are the Advantages of Dental Crown Types?

In addition to supporting oral and dental health functions, dental crowns are also used to achieve impressive smiles. Patients can safely choose dental crown types. So, what are the advantages of dental crown types?

  • In cases of missing teeth, they restore aesthetics and lost function by applying bridges over implants or natural teeth.
  • They help save broken, decayed, or damaged teeth with healthy roots.
  • They cover the appearance of dental implants in the mouth and provide an aesthetic look.
  • They allow worn, cracked, or broken teeth to be restored and used again.
  • They are used in smile design.

How Are Dental Crown Types Applied?

First, measurements of the tooth to be crowned are taken. Then, the crown materials to be used are selected. After that, the tooth is cleaned and shaped appropriately for the crown. Molds are then prepared and temporarily placed on the tooth. The patient continues using the temporarily placed mold so that the compatibility of the tooth can be observed. If any problems are detected during this process, the mold is removed and the issue is resolved with appropriate treatment. In the final stage, the dental crown is applied and the process is completed. Dental crown procedures usually take three sessions if no complications occur. However, depending on the patient’s condition and preference, the process can be accelerated and completed in two sessions. Having 2–3 days between each session is very important for proper tooth adaptation. After the dental crown process is completed, the patient must pay attention to oral hygiene. Teeth should be brushed twice a day and dental floss should be used regularly. There is no special care routine required specifically for crowned teeth. This is a clear explanation of how dental crown types are applied.
