What Are The Rules for Brushing Your Teeth?
09.02.2026

There are rules for brushing teeth. When these rules are followed, you can achieve a more beautiful smile and healthier, problem-free teeth. Choosing the right materials is important, and brushing should be done by starting with the upper teeth first and then moving on to the lower teeth.

Although many people believe that they brush their teeth correctly, in reality, proper importance is often not given to tooth brushing. There are certain tooth brushing rules that should be followed in order to maintain healthier teeth. When these rules are followed, you can achieve a more attractive smile and trouble-free teeth.

In addition to the rules that should be followed while brushing teeth, it is also important to choose the right toothpaste and toothbrush according to your teeth and gum structure. You know your own dental structure best. Therefore, it is important to be meticulous when choosing the right materials.

Tooth Brushing Techniques

During tooth brushing, many people fail to achieve complete oral hygiene because they use incorrect techniques. There are certain rules that should be followed while brushing your teeth. These rules are as follows:

  1. Choosing the right materials is important. Therefore, avoid using toothbrushes that are hard enough to cause bleeding or damage to your gums.
  2. Be more gentle when brushing teeth with fillings and avoid applying excessive pressure with the toothbrush.
  3. Brush your upper teeth first, followed by the lower tooth surfaces.
  4. Then, properly brush the inner surfaces of your teeth.
  5. Finally, after cleaning your tongue, clean your toothbrush as well. Afterwards, place the toothbrush in a non-humid area, preferably after drying it slightly with a paper towel.

Some methods that should be applied to ensure maximum cleanliness while brushing teeth:

  1. Brushing your teeth in up-and-down or side-to-side motions is not a correct method.
  2. Always make sure to brush your teeth using circular motions.
  3. Brushing your teeth with excessive pressure does not result in better cleaning; on the contrary, it damages the tooth enamel. Therefore, be sure to brush gently.
  4. Finally, brush your tongue from back to front to remove food debris and bacteria that adhere to the rough surface of the tongue.

How Often Should You Brush Your Teeth?

Experts recommend brushing your teeth three times a day. This can be done after meals. Since brushing your teeth helps you feel fresher, it increases self-confidence and helps eliminate issues such as bad breath and tooth decay caused by inadequate oral care.

Brushing your teeth more than three times a day may damage the tooth surface and enamel due to the effects of toothpaste. Therefore, teeth should be brushed three times a day for at least two minutes each time. When necessary or optionally, you may also benefit from using mouthwash products.
