If the wisdom tooth root is horizontally impacted or if the roots are separated and embedded in the bone, the tooth is removed by dividing it into sections. If your wisdom teeth are impacted and covered by gum tissue, an incision is made in the gum to reach the bone. A comfortable environment is prepared for the tooth extraction. The tooth is removed from the area by separating it into pieces.

How Are Wisdom Tooth Surgeries Performed?

In Which Situations Should an Impacted Wisdom Tooth Be Extracted?

Impacted wisdom teeth usually cause inflammation of the surrounding soft tissue. These inflammations lead to pain and soreness in patients. They may also cause cyst formation in the affected area. Therefore, these teeth should be removed as soon as possible. Infected wisdom teeth are treated with antibiotics prescribed by the dentist. As long as the infected tooth is not extracted, the infection will continue to recur. Wisdom teeth that do not have enough space in the jawbone remain impacted. This condition puts pressure on neighboring teeth and causes pain. If impacted teeth do not have sufficient space in the jawbone, they can cause crowding and misalignment of teeth. Horizontally and diagonally positioned teeth can cause decay in the adjacent molar. Bacterial plaque forming around wisdom teeth can also trigger gum problems.

What Happens After Impacted Wisdom Tooth Surgery?

After wisdom tooth surgery, the patient is kept under observation in the clinic for a while. If no complications occur during this period, the patient is discharged. To prevent infection after the surgery, the dentist prescribes medication. If the medications are taken regularly, pain and discomfort will subside in a short time and swelling will decrease. Oral wounds usually heal rapidly within a few days. The mouth area receives increased blood flow, which is why post-extraction bleeding may be more noticeable. After impacted wisdom tooth extraction, a blood clot forms in the empty socket. Within a few days, the wound in this area begins to heal. Complete healing with bone formation is achieved within 2–3 months. After impacted wisdom tooth surgery, the patient should consume plenty of fluids. Cold compresses with ice water should be applied to prevent swelling in the area.

How Is Wisdom Tooth Extraction Performed?

Wisdom teeth are a source of problems for many people. In some individuals, the jaw structure is smaller. A narrow jawbone causes crowding of teeth. Wisdom teeth are located just behind the two large molars in the mouth. There are four wisdom teeth in total: two lower and two upper. Some people may not have wisdom teeth at all. Wisdom teeth usually begin to erupt around the age of 17 and complete their development by the age of 30.

Anatomical Conditions That May Occur Around Wisdom Teeth

Above the upper wisdom teeth lies the maxillary sinus cavity. Sinus cavities are air-filled spaces located between the facial bones. The sinuses filter the air we breathe, regulate voice resonance, and reduce the weight of the skull. Applying incorrect force during wisdom tooth extraction may cause broken tooth fragments to enter the sinus cavity. Greater care is required when extracting lower wisdom teeth. This area divides the lower jaw into right and left sections. Damage to the nerves passing through this region may cause temporary numbness of the lip. During extraction of lower wisdom teeth, an incision made in the gum may damage the lingual nerve located in this area. Damage to this nerve can result in numbness of the tongue.

Why Should Impacted Wisdom Teeth Be Extracted?

Soft tissue inflammation around partially impacted wisdom teeth is a very common condition. Infections in the gums may be delayed with antibiotic use. However, unless the wisdom teeth are surgically removed, this condition will continue to recur. Impacted wisdom teeth may sometimes cause the formation of cysts and tumors around the tooth.

How Is Impacted Wisdom Tooth Surgery Performed?

Before impacted tooth surgery, a panoramic X-ray is taken. The X-ray helps determine the impacted position of the tooth and identify potential risks around it. If deemed necessary by the specialist, a 3D dental tomography scan is performed. This allows evaluation of the relationship between the tooth and the nerves passing nearby. The boundaries between the wisdom teeth and the sinuses are also identified. During wisdom tooth surgery, a small incision is made under anesthesia. The gum flap is lifted to access the tooth.
